thoughts for my sons ~ Monday Musings

Rudiments of Life
Jayne Jaudon Ferrer

If I could give you a list of ways
to make your life more pleasant,
I would say
eat mangoes,
stand tall,
pick apples,
read books,
buy flowers,
smell stew,
give presents,
give hugs,
bake cookies,
write letters,
pet puppies,
climb mountains,
wear sweaters,
hear music,
make friends,
use chopsticks,
go skiing,
hold babies,
fly kites,
watch clouds,
sing passionately,
breath deeply,
attend church,
eschew politics,
acquire patience,
ignore idiots,
pray daily,
cry unashamedly,
smile freely,
laugh lustily,
be truthful,
share knowledge,
ask questions,
take naps,
plan picnics,
kiss gently,
say thank you,
save keepsakes,
celebrate often,
love lots.

Friday My Town Shootout

Mary has chosen this weeks photo topic - "That which is incongruous:out of place, ridiculous, inconsistent, contradictory.

I have to apologize as it has been another hectic week getting my son ready for college. I don't have any appropriate photos from my archives for this weeks photo theme but I do have a cute one of my dog Lucky, as a puppy (on the left) with his friend Buddy. Sorry I will try to do better next week. Click on the camera on the right hand side of my blog to visit the Friday Shoot Out gang and view their take on this weeks theme.

Green Dry Cleaning - Thursday Thinking Green

Green America is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1982 whose mission is to harness economic power— "the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society." I felt this article even though somewhat dated was worth repeating. Click on the hyperlink or the image to be taken to the article: Green America: Real Green: Green "Dry" Cleaning

Organizing my Studio - Tuesday Tips

How have you organized your Art Studio? So many of us work in quite a variety of spaces from the corner of a living area, an extra closet, or perhaps in a slice of your basement. I am fortunate to have a dedicated office/art studio in my home. I admittedly took over the dining room last year after we decided we could survive with our eat in kitchen. Whatever space we might have I am sure we can all agree it is important to establish some semblance of order so we aren't always searching for things. I thought I would share a few photos on what worked for me. Feel free to share a comment or photo link in the comments area on your own suggestions. You can also click on the photos to enlarge.

My dining room hutch now used for storage of supplies. A corner niche for creating. The little storage unit above the table is handy for all those little bits for collage.

I enjoy using vintage glass jars and cups for jewelry items. Sectioned plates also work quite well for this purpose.

The vintage styled glass holder is perfect for corralling brushes.
Don't forget to think of vertical and horizontal spaces for storage.
I use tension rods and curtains to hide clutter where I can.

My desk is large and U - shaped which makes it great as a space to create my jewelry. As I type on my keyboard, I enjoy a bank of windows with wonderful views of my backyard. I do feel quite fortunate to have such a great space!

Lastly, let me introduce you to Misha my supervisor!

Friday My Town Shootout ~ Interesting Signs

Si along came up with this weeks Photo topic - "Interesting and amusing signs around your hometown."
Great theme but I have to admit it has been a hectic week for me. I did come up with one great photograph. This sign is on Route 1 in Kennebunk, a very busy street. A family erected it in front of their home after a moose was frequently seen in their front yard and they were seriously concerned that it may get hit by a car.
Be sure to check out the rest of the groups photos at Friday My Town Shootout!

Artist/Naturalist Andy Goldsworthy ~ Thursday Thinking Green

Resourceful, meticulous, innovative are just a few of the words I would use to describe Naturalist Artist Andy Goldsworthy. Goldsworthy is a very talented British artist who creates his art through found natural elements. Here is a quote from the artist:
"Movement, change, light, growth and decay are the lifeblood of nature, the energies that I try to tap through my work. I need the shock of touch, the resistance of place, materials and weather, the earth as my source. Nature is in a state of change and that change is the key to understanding. I want my art to be sensitive and alert to changes in material, season and weather. Each work grows, stays, decays. Process and decay are implicit. Transience in my work reflects what I find in nature."

"The underlying tension of a lot of my art is to try and look through the surface appearance of things. Inevitably, one way of getting beneath the surface is to introduce a hole, a window into what lies below."

Friday My Town Shootout ~ Relaxation

This weeks Friday My Town Shootout Photo assignment is from Lena of Spirit of Lena (SOL) who suggests the topic Relaxation - "My idea for relaxation was anything or place that fill people with a sense of calmness or relaxation, like a favorite garden, sitting on the porch, or park, etc. Anyplace that fills you with a sense of happiness and calm."

So here we are in my hometown....specifically in my backyard....
Here is a photo of an overview of where my family likes to relax. We have a large piece of property with many trees and a field. We enclosed part of the yard with a picket fence to contain our two Shelties. The hammock is everyones favorite!

For a relaxing meal outdoors we sit at this table by the overgrown herb garden ;) We also enjoy the cool Maine August nights lighting the fire-pit and eating...you guessed it - smores.I really enjoy soothing sounds and someday would like a lovely fountain in the garden. For now I enjoy windchimes and this set hangs from my deck off the master bedroom on the second floor.
The deck is much too hot for me in the daytime but I enjoy the evening looking at the stars.
I try to start each day with meditation and prayer. It focuses & centers me, usually allowing me to be more creative (and patient). Most days I take a 15 minute nap at 3:00. My R&R - relaxation and refreshment! I love my large king size bed, (my husband not so much. He prefers a full as he likes to snuggle).
I mentioned I like to relax with soothing sounds. I had trouble sleeping last year and my husband bought me this CD. It is just the sound of the ocean lapping the shore - ever sooooo relaxing. It helped tremendously. Of course I had to include a photo of the surf at Kennebunk Beach. My most relaxing place to be!

Go Paperless - Thursday Thinking Green

I have been paying my bills on-line now for many years. What I never realized was how healthy it was for the environment. Here are a few statistics I found on the internet that should make you consider giving up the monthly check writing.
  • It generally takes 15 minutes a month for people to pay their bills on-line whereas it typically takes 2 hours for those who pay by check.
  • A majority of identity theft cases results from personal information obtained from checks, billing statements and bank statements.
  • Based on an average of 20 bills and statements per household, it is estimated that the average household annually spends up to $150 on postage stamps, checks, late fees and fuel costs.
  • By simply receiving and paying your many bills electronically , you can save 2 square foot of forest, 15 miles of gas, and 15 pounds of greenhouse gases. This is just one bill! Imagine if you paid all your bills on-line.

Monday Musings ~ Blank Canvas

Awakening...

By John McLeod

Awakening, dawn's chorus
Welcoming,
The day new, untouched
Waiting to be filled....

And will we paint a rainbow
With all its promise
Or dull the canvas
Sadly seen?

Each day brings its own colours
To be chosen, mixed,
Pigments of joy,
Happy moments,
Smiles and laughter....

And which will you choose?
For 'Life' is choice,
We are all painters
In our own way,
All needing to create
Something of worth,
Of lasting beauty,
Marking our journey....

Footprints in the sand....

The sky today is azure,
The sun warm and golden
A filigree of light and shadow-play
Through the gently swaying trees.

I clean my brushes,
Choose my palette
Of vibrant, living colours,
And begin to fill
Today's blank canvas
