Thinking Green - Eat Fresh

Did you know that food processing and packaging accounts for about half the total energy used in the food production system. That reason alone should make you take out a recipe and start cooking! For your health and the health of the planet, try cutting down on packaged and processed foods. Instead, visit bulk bins, or buy natural ingredients and spices and try making your favorites from a recipe. The nice thing about buying spices in bulk is the freshness factor and it can be cheaper as you just have to buy what you need for your recipe. Bon Appetit!

Fun Math Fact - Monday Musings

I am not particularly gifted in Math. In fact in High School I actually experienced math anxiety when taking math tests. I can't explain why. I didn't do poorly but just had "issues" with numbers. I found this math problem recently (maybe some of you have already seen this-maybe in math class). I thought it had an interesting outcome and it didn't cause me a bit of anxiety!

Monday Musings - Dreaming of Spring

Seedlings, Artist - Xavier Cortada
Are you like me and dreaming of Spring? I've started thinking about what I will plant in my garden this summer. Now is a good time to look through gardening magazines and catalogs and order next year's vegetable garden. You could start your plants inside about 6-8 weeks before the last frost in your area. I find it also brings hope and inspiration into my wintry world!

Thinking Green - After the Storm

After a heavy snowfall, you might want to go outside and check your roof insulation. Typically, good insulation keeps snow on the roof longer. If it melts faster than your neighbors, you're losing heat (and therefore money) and may want to add a few more rolls of insulation in your rafters.

Monday Musings - Cabin Fever Cure

Are the walls closing in on you yet? Cabin fever setting in from long winter days? For a lift of spirits I like to rearrange a few things in my home by changing around some furniture for a different point of view and purchasing a few inexpensive decorative touches. I tend to go for a few plants and florals but a new print or vase in a Bright Spring color might suit you. Did you know that Turquoise was chosen as Pantones "Color of the Year" for 2010? You may consider incorporating a bit of this inspirational color into your room with small accent pieces or even painting a section of a room from this tranquil palette. Perhaps it will inspire thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and provide you with a calm escape from the winter doldrums. Just a few small changes or additions can be enough to transform a room's mood and your own!

February is American Heart Month - how apropos with Valentines Day. Make a date with your sweetie to see your respective doctors and check your numbers - blood pressure, bad or good cholesterol, etc. Several Cities offer health fairs and clinics this time of year with free screenings. Check the newspaper or your local hospitals for locations in your area.
